Centaur Cavalry Veteran Robert H. (Bob) Maxey: B Troop (August 1960 to October 1970) and F Troop, 4th Cav (1971/1972) injured and in rehab
Bob served with B Troop, 3/4 Cav on his second Vietnam tour and joined the F Troop Centaurs in April 1971 during his third Vietnam tour. Bob is a more than typical Cav Trooper, having served in Three Wars, was a Prisoner of War twice, successfully escaping both times. He accumulated Twelve Purple Hearts along the way, during the three wars. (Information courtesy of Fred Reese, Dale Dow and Bob Maxey)

11/17/2011: We received an update on Bob's progress from Ardean Maxey. Her comments are copied here:
Max is getting used to being back home. We take a drive around town every day and he's slowly remembering more of his location. However, when we get back home he is surprised to find out that it's our house. Then he sees the cats and other familiar items and starts to realize that this is indeed where we live.
He wore his green uniform, flat hat and spurs on Veteran's Day and we attended the ceremony in the park. He enjoyed seeing his old friends from around town and they all seemed to enjoy seeing him. A lot of them brought their children and grandchildren over to introduce them to Max. It made him feel very proud and he was talking a lot about all of you that day. Some of his children joined us for lunch with TREA (The Retired Enlisted Association) group, so all in all he had a very good day.
He sees the Doctor again tomorrow to check his progress and he has started on his outpatient physical therapy. He's walking with a walker, sometimes a cane - which is still pretty difficult for him - and sometimes gets frustrated and tries it with no help at all, but quickly realizes that's not such a good idea. I think he's coming along very well given all the difficulties he has to deal with.
10/11/2011: We received additional information from Ardean Maxey regarding Bob's progress. Her comments are copied here:
Max continues to get stronger and has been upgraded from 25% weight bearing to 50%. This is a good thing because he gets up and walks anyway when no one is watching. He overdid it the other day and was in quite a bit of pain so they gave him some stronger pain medication which threw him back into confusion and depression. I've had a long talk with the nurses and they are going to see if the Doctor will change the prescription to something that isn't so detrimental to his reasoning ability. I sure don't want him in pain but physical pain might be better than the mental pain and confusion he experiences when they give him that medication. I hope he'll be home in a few weeks. I think the familiar surroundings will help him a lot.
(Your cards and notes to Bob continue to be appreciated by both Bob and Ardean during his difficult injury rehab.)
09/19/2011: We have heard from Bob Maxey's wife Ardean that it has been two weeks since he fell and, to quote Ardean: "He's certainly is in better shape today than he was two weeks ago, but he has a long way to go." Apparently Bob hasn't figured out that he shouldn't try to do all of the things he was able to do a few weeks ago, like walking about on his own, but the Doctors and Nurses are encouraging him to go a bit slower. Ardean tells us that Bob really appreciates the cards and emails that he has received from the old veteran Mackenzie's Raiders and Centaurs. He enjoys reading them all and no one means as much to him as "His Men."
So keep the cards and notes going to Bob and Ardean. She will try to keep us posted on his progress.
09/08/2011: Your website received information from Fred Reese advising that Bob Maxey finds himself in medical rehab. See Fred's email (pertinent info duplicated below) for information. Bob's wife Ardean suggested that some get well cards to let Bob know that he is still in the thoughts of the Centaurs and Cavalry families will be much appreciated by both of them.
Emailed info received from Fred Reese:
Hi guys. I talked with Ardean Maxey this morning (September 8, 2011) about Bob. He broke his hip due to falling and had to have surgery.
He is out of the hospital but now has entered a rehab facility. Ardean did not know how long he would be in the rehab facility but he is making some progress. Information on the rehab facility can be found on their website: Holiday Resort of Salina
A few get well cards and notes would provide some much needed cheer for Bob. He is 84 and has a birthday coming up in December. It will be helpful to Bob to know that he has not been forgotten.
Send your Get Well cards and notes to:
